There is a long tradition of tuition and guiding at Wessex Chalk Streams.

Richard Slocock set up the Wessex Fly Fishing School based at Lawrences Farm in 1981 and offered guiding and fly fishing courses for nearly twenty years, introducing countless anglers to the joys of fly fishing, many of whom remain friends and fish the Wessex Chalk Streams’ river beats and lakes to this day.

In the late 1990’s Richard started to step back from full time guiding and tuition to focus on acquiring and letting more fishing. Thereafter, tuition and guiding were provided, firstly by Roderic Hall and then from 2004 by Tony King.

Tony guided and taught numerous anglers over the years in a relaxed style with an in depth understanding of fly fishing and casting. He understood the heart beat of the local streams, the fly hatches and water conditions and was therefore a very popular guide and coach.

Sadly, during 2022 Tony was diagnosed with cancer and died in November the same year. He was a great friend to Wessex Chalk Streams and we will miss him.

Ian was a good friend and colleague of Tony King and they had worked together for a number of years.

He is an Angling Trust Licenced Angling Lead Coach and a full member of the Game Angling Instructors’ Association. He has in-depth knowledge of our lakes and all our river beats having fished, guided and coached on them for many years.

We do not permit other guides/instructors to operate on our waters, however Ian will suggest a suitably qualified replacement if he is unavailable for a guiding or tuition assignment.

Services offered by Ian include guiding on river beats and personal tuition.

He is also planning to hold some two day fly fishing courses this year:

  • Beginners Fly Fishing – a two day course covering all the basics and introduction to techniques for lake and river fishing. This is an opportunity to start experiencing the wonderful sport of fly fishing. Maximum 4 participants – all gear provided. Provisional dates (2023) 22nd-23rd April, 15th-16th July.
  • River Fly Fishing – a two day course for existing fly fishers who want a more in depth look into fishing rivers including specialised casts for rivers, different fishing techniques, observation and watercraft. During the course there will be an opportunity to fish the River Piddle and the River Frome. Maximum 4 participants. Provisional dates (2023) 29th-30th April, 24th-25th June.

We are unable to take bookings for Ian’s services and courses, so please contact him directly on 07740 613190.
